The name of a company is one of its most important assets. Reasons for a company’s name change (or Stock Symbol) have to be compelling.
Reasons for Name change are:
1: A merger/acquisition. This could lead to adoption of acquirer’s name, or the acquired company’s name, or cobranded name, or a new amalgamated name which has traces of both legacy names, or an entirely new name
2: Company diversifies their business and old name did not fully capture the spirit of diversified company.
3: Company has diversified their business.Company becomes too diversified and adopts a name corresponding to flagship product
4: Negative connotations attached to legacy name (e.g. Enron)
5: Catch the flavor of prevailing investment climate (e.g. “.com” era)
